Medication Overview
While there's no medication specifically approved for RSD, several types may help reduce emotional reactivity:
Alpha-2 Agonists
Examples: Guanfacine (Intuniv), Clonidine (Kapvay)
May help reduce emotional reactivity. About 30% find significant relief.
Stimulants
Examples: Methylphenidate, Amphetamines
Can help with overall emotional regulation by treating underlying ADHD.
MAOIs
Examples: Tranylcypromine (Parnate)
Historical treatment of choice but rarely used due to dietary restrictions.
What Actually Helps
- Understanding: Simply knowing RSD is neurological, not a character flaw, is profoundly validating
- Self-awareness: Recognising your triggers and patterns helps you prepare and respond
- Support system: Having people who understand and can offer reassurance without judgement
- Skills training: DBT skills, grounding techniques, and cognitive restructuring
